How to protect artwork from sun fade with window shades

Window shades can help manage the light reaching artwork, but they cannot guarantee that a painting, print, or photograph will never fade. Start with the object's care needs, where it is displayed, and how much light reaches it throughout the day.

Understand more than the UV number

The Canadian Conservation Institute explains that visible light can fade sensitive materials, while ultraviolet exposure can cause other deterioration. Materials differ in sensitivity, and the duration of exposure matters as well as its intensity.

That means a UV-blocking claim is not a complete preservation plan. Avoid treating one universal percentage or a predicted number of years as proof that an artwork will be protected.

Check placement before choosing a shade

Watch where direct sunlight falls and how that changes during the day. Consider moving particularly sensitive work away from a sunny position. Photos of the wall at different times can help explain the problem during a consultation.

For valuable, fragile, or irreplaceable artwork, ask a qualified conservator for guidance suited to the object. Its materials and condition may matter more than the appearance of a fabric swatch.

Compare the exact fabric and coverage

Ask for the selected fabric's documented light and UV performance. Solar-screen openness describes the open area of the weave; it does not directly provide a UV-blocking percentage. Check the actual color and fabric instead of relying on a generic product category.

Compare the outward view and daylight you want with stronger coverage from an opaque layer or suitable drapery. Light may still enter around edges or through another window. The whole display area matters, not just the window nearest the artwork.

Make the chosen protection practical to use

Choose controls that are easy to reach and operate. If a selected motor supports scheduling, it can help with routine positioning, but check the result as seasonal sunlight changes. Automation does not guarantee that exposure is always controlled.

Rainier Blinds can discuss available fabrics, mounting, and controls for your windows. Treat that service as window-treatment planning; obtain object-specific preservation advice separately when needed.

FAQ

Will a solar shade stop artwork from fading?
It can reduce exposure, but no universal fade-prevention guarantee applies. The artwork, light, duration, glass, fabric, and use all matter.
Is UV blocking all I need to consider?
No. Visible light can also fade sensitive materials, so review placement and total exposure as well.
Should I choose the lowest openness fabric?
Compare documented performance and samples for the actual room. Openness alone does not establish whether a fabric provides the protection an artwork needs.
